Farming in Ancient Lake Agassiz
- About 15,000 years ago Lake Agassiz covered southeastern Manitoba and much of the surrounding region. - The lake began draining ~12,000 years ago and left a thick, nearly flat deposit of nutrient-rich silt and clay that now supports productive farmland. - The Dominion Land Survey’s one-square-mile grid (late 19th century) still defines field, road, shelterbelt, and drainage layout. - An ISS astronaut photograph (April 19, 2026) shows snow-covered, rectangular farm patterns near Lake Winnipeg and cottage clusters around Gull Lake.
