Ever Restless Mount Dukono Erupts
- Indonesia had nine actively erupting volcanoes in May 2026, the most of any country at the time. - Mount Dukono on Halmahera Island has erupted nearly continuously since 1933, producing frequent ash, gas emissions, and volcanic bombs. - On May 8, 2026, falling ash and volcanic bombs killed hikers; activity continued with ~52 events per day (May 9–16) and ash plumes to 400–4,300 m above the summit. - NASA and U.S. satellites detected thermal anomalies, ash, and sulfur dioxide; authorities set alert level 2 and advised a 4 km exclusion zone.
