Smile lifts off on quest to reveal Earth’s invisible shield against the solar wind

- ESA-led SMILE mission launched to study Earth’s magnetosphere and how it deflects the solar wind. - Spacecraft will image the magnetospheric boundary and auroras to reveal interactions between solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field. - SMILE combines X-ray and ultraviolet instruments with in-situ plasma sensors for global and local measurements. - The mission aims to improve understanding of space weather drivers and their impacts on Earth’s near-space environment.
